2009 Recipients


Lorne Fancett
Finger Lakes Community College

A 1986 graduate of Geneva High School, Lorne Fancett has returned to college at FLCC following a 14-year career in the United States Air Force that included service in 20 countries. He has received several medals for his military work, including the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal for his efforts in Operation Enduring Freedom and a Humanitarian Service Medal for his work at the Oklahoma City bombing site in 1995. A Dean's list student at FLCC, Fancett is studying Nursing, and plans to acquire his license as a Registered Nurse.

Devin Spears
Finger Lakes Community College

A 1999 graduate of Waterloo High School, Devin Spears is currently a Deans List student at FLCC, where she is three courses away from receiving her degree in Accounting. Married and the mother of a five year old son, Spears puts family at the heart of her goals, hoping to optimize her at-home hours by operating her own accounting business. Spears previously worked at Geneva's Living Center, where she helped care for Gerry Cuony and met Ed on his daily visits.

Katherine Reiners
Geneva High School

Katherine Reiners graduated from Geneva High School in June 2009, following an active high school career, including service as Class President for three years, a Student Council Representative for four years, and three years of high school cheerleading. Now a psychology major at SUNY Fredonia, Katherine has added service on her dorm counsel and involvement in community service projects to her classroom experience. In addition, She was accepted into the University dance group, allowing her to continue to study dance, as she has for the past fourteen years.

Adam Murphy
Geneva High School

By the time Adam Murphy graduated from Geneva High School in June 09, he had held leadership roles in everything from a festival and high school club to celebrate Geneva's diversity to the Geneva Varsity Soccer team. He was ordained as a Subdeacon for St Michael's Parish, served as Vice President of the diocese teen group, and was named an Eagle Scout through Troop 4 in Geneva. He headed up the school's art club, played music with the HWS Brass Ensemble and interned with "Geneva 13" a quarterly magazine about Geneva Life. Now a first year student at McGill University in Montreal Canada, Adam is studying Religion and hoping to minor in Middle East Peace and Conflict Studies. Looking forward, he hopes to have the opportunity to work in Lebanon or Palestine, either through the Peace Corps or IOCC (International Orthodox Christian Charities).

Brendan Costello
DeSales High School

Brendan Costello graduated from DeSales High School in June 09, after serving as President of both the National Honor Society and Student Council, An outstanding athlete, Costello played baseball, basketball, golf, and football for the Saints. As a first year student in the Honors Program at the University of Hartford, Brendan plans to major in biology, and continue on as a pre-medical student. He has been active in intramural sports and is a member of the university Pre-Med Club.

Margaret Shaffer
DeSales High School

The salutatorian of the DeSales Class of 2009, Margaret Shaffer was Secretary of the Honor Society, active in athletics and many clubs and organizations. Her involvement is something she intends to continue at Nazareth College, where she is currently enrolled as a first year student. She is following an exploratory program, taking a wide range of courses, including religious studies, economics and computer science
